Expecting and Stressed? How does a Prenatal Paternity Test Help You?

Finding out about pregnancy is a hugely emotional experience for any woman. Various reactions can be elicited, from joy to shock, concern, and everything in between. During pregnancy, every woman knows that she may experience a whole spectrum of emotions & many contradictory ones due to the sudden surge of hormones. These emotions can be amplified when a woman has uncertainty about the paternity of her baby. For women in this tough situation, the Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity DNA Test offers a solution to this problem that can remove the uncertainty & stress at what should be a happy time.

Stress Vs. DNA Test While Pregnant

We know innately that stress during pregnancy might not be healthy, but now there's proof. According to the study conducted by the University of Zurich, long-term high-stress levels during pregnancy could contribute to a child developing both physical & mental issues. These conditions range from ADHD to cardiovascular diseases.

When someone is very stressed, the body produces several stress hormones to help the body cope with the situation. These hormones flood the mother's body but will also pass to the baby. A little stress hormone can positively impact a fetus, but too much stress hormone over an extended period can also have a very negative impact. Therefore, a Prenatal Paternity Test is ideal for women with these concerns.

How does Prenatal Paternity Test Works?

Unlike earlier techniques, where amniotic fluid had to be withdrawn using syringes, non-invasive prenatal paternity testing involves blood collection from the pregnant woman. This is because fragments of the fetal placental DNA are present in the mother's blood. The child's placental DNA fragments are isolated and tested using this blood against the alleged father's DNA sample.

While the mother's blood is required for the baby's DNA, the alleged father need not necessarily give his blood sample. Instead, he can provide the regular buccal swab sample for the test.

After isolation, the father's DNA sample & the placental DNA fragments are tested separately. This procedure includes shortening DNA into smaller fragments and amplifying it using the technology of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction).

The resulting profiles are then matched. If the DNA analysis shows a 99.99% match, then the paternity is established with the baby. And if it is 0% inclusion, then paternity is not established.

Suppose a mother is carrying twins; a Prenatal Paternity DNA Test while pregnant may not produce conclusive results. This is because there is free-floating DNA in the mother's bloodstream from both fetuses, and current technology would not be able to differentiate & analyze it.
